Commando Squad began as a very different production. Around 1984, Trans World Entertainment developed the project with Herb Freed attached to write and direct and Mike Norris expected to lead it. By 1985, the picture had been retooled into a “girls with guns” action vehicle for Sybil Danning and Israeli actress Anat Atzmon, with Fred Olen Ray hired to direct. Danning’s involvement was unusually brief but financially significant: she was reportedly scheduled to work only six days for a fee of $25,000, while her name and international action-star profile helped give the project commercial value and attract overseas financing. The film was scheduled to begin shooting in January 1986, but delays and repeated rewrites followed.
