John Cazale, already celebrated for playing Fredo Corleone in The Godfather films, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer before The Deer Hunter began filming. The production was initially reluctant to insure him, a serious obstacle in an industry where completion insurance could determine whether a major picture was financed at all. Robert De Niro, who had helped bring Cazale and Meryl Streep to director Michael Cimino’s attention, pushed for Cazale’s participation. Streep accepted the role of Linda largely so she could remain with Cazale, her partner, throughout the shoot, and she wrote much of Linda’s dialogue herself rather than treating the character as the thinly written girlfriend described in earlier drafts.
