Old Reliable's decline was a particularly bleak consequence of technological change and the AIDS crisis. In 1990, an accident caused Hurles to gradually lose the sight in one eye, making the physical demands of his photography and video work still more difficult. Soon afterward, Internet pornography destroyed much of the market for his labor-intensive photographs, cassette recordings, and videotapes, while AIDS and drug use killed many of the models and potential models who had formed the world around his work. Hurles later remarked that he knew where many of his former models were—'six feet under.' His company eventually folded, and he survived on welfare and food stamps. A massive stroke in 2008 further damaged his health, although friends and admirers continued to preserve his archive and regard him as an important outsider figure in gay photographic history.
