After his Oscar-winning work on Star Wars, John Barry was brought back into the George Lucas orbit as a second-unit director on The Empire Strikes Back. Two weeks into principal photography, on 31 May 1979, Barry collapsed on set with a dangerously high fever — recorded at 104°F — and was rushed to hospital. He died the next day, 1 June 1979, of meningitis. The sudden loss of a key creative force — a man whose architectural eye and art-direction had helped define the look of modern blockbusters — stunned colleagues and deprived the sequel of an experienced designer and filmmaker. Barry's memorial was held on 11 June at St. Paul's Church, Grove Park, Hounslow; he was cremated that day.
