Jim Mitchell drove to the Corte Madera home of his younger brother Artie carrying a .22 rifle inherited from their father. Friends and associates had reportedly urged Jim to intervene in Artie’s increasingly destructive behavior, which was linked to alcoholism and cocaine abuse. Inside the house, Artie’s lover, O’Farrell dancer Julie Bajo, was present but did not see the shooting. She heard the gunfire and immediately called 911; police arrived within minutes and arrested Jim. Artie had been shot three times—in the head, abdomen, and right arm. The case became one of the Bay Area’s most sensational trials, transforming the brothers from countercultural pornography entrepreneurs into national crime figures. Jim was represented by longtime friend Michael Kennedy, who argued against a murder conviction. The jury rejected murder but found Jim guilty of voluntary manslaughter, and he received a six-year sentence. He served approximately three years at San Quentin before returning to the O’Farrell in 1997. The family remained divided over the killing: Jim’s supporters portrayed it as the culmination of Artie’s addiction and erratic conduct, while Artie’s children later called it a premeditated killing motivated by greed and jealousy. Jim died of an apparent heart attack in 2007 and was buried beside his brother.

After meeting performer Andrew “Drew” Okun—professionally known as Al Parker—while cycling in Hermosa Beach in 1973, Taylor and Parker formed both a domestic and professional partnership that lasted nearly fourteen years. In 1980 they founded Surge Studios, with Parker serving as its best-known performer and public-facing creative figure while Taylor handled much of the business operation, production work, and still photography. Taylor’s importance was therefore often greater than his screen credits or publicity suggested, and he was involved as the company began promoting safer-sex practices during the early AIDS crisis. Taylor died in Los Angeles on September 9, 1986, from complications related to AIDS, at only forty-six years old. His death came during a period when AIDS was devastating gay communities and the adult-film world, while fear, stigma, and limited medical understanding made the loss especially painful and politically charged. Although Taylor had worked behind the scenes as much as in front of the camera, his death marked the disappearance of a key producer and business figure from an important period in gay cinema. His remains were cremated and scattered at sea, giving the story a stark final image after a career spent helping build a studio whose public identity was more closely associated with his partner.
