On September 11, 2001, Frank De Martini — a World Trade Center construction manager famous for helping repair the complex after the 1993 bombing — and co-worker Pablo Ortiz mounted one of the most dramatic and heartbreaking rescue efforts inside the North Tower. After American Airlines Flight 11 struck a few floors above them, De Martini told his wife to get out and, together with Ortiz and Mak Hanna, began climbing toward the impact zone, breaking into damaged offices, finding trapped coworkers and physically carrying or guiding dozens to safety. Their efforts are credited with saving as many as 77 people, including MetLife manager Rick Bryan and secretary Dianne DeFontes.
