Principal photography for Bert I. Gordon's Empire of the Ants took place in the fall of 1976 across remote locations in Florida's Everglades and in St. Lucie and Martin Counties. The scenery supplied the kind of danger that no special-effects department could manufacture: cast and crew were working in isolated swampland, with the nearest women's restroom roughly half an hour away by speedboat. Pamela Susan Shoop recalled that every bathroom trip consumed about an hour of production time, turning an already difficult shoot into a logistical ordeal. The location also produced wildly unstable weather. Although the film was being made in Florida, autumn temperatures dropped near freezing, an especially severe shock for performers working outdoors and often in wet conditions.
