For years, MGM could not issue the planned special edition of Escape from New York because the film’s original negative had disappeared. The situation was finally resolved when a workprint containing deleted material turned up in a film depository inside a salt mine in Hutchinson, Kansas. The recovered footage included the excised Colorado bank-robbery opening, which introduced Snake Plissken and established more of his criminal backstory. John Carpenter chose not to restore the sequence to the main feature after deciding that the film only truly began once Snake arrived in Manhattan, but the discovery allowed MGM’s long-delayed 2003 Collector’s Edition to preserve the material as an extra.
