Bob Murawski — best known as Sam Raimi’s editor and later as co‑founder (with Sage Stallone in 1995) of Grindhouse Releasing — helped shepherd back into circulation some of the most controversial titles in exploitation cinema, chief among them Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust (1980). The film’s notoriety is the stuff of urban legend and courtroom drama: when it first premiered in 1980, the graphic on‑screen “deaths” of several American actors were so convincing that Italian prosecutors arrested director Ruggero Deodato and charged him with murder. Deodato was forced to produce the supposedly dead actors in court to prove they were alive; he ultimately defended the film as fiction, but not before it ignited worldwide outrage over both its simulated human violence and very real animal cruelty — documented killings of turtles, birds and other animals — which led to bans, censorship, and prosecutions in multiple countries.
