Decades after the original film’s release, its ownership became the basis for an unusually bitter pornography-industry copyright feud. Arrow Productions acquired rights to Deep Throat for home-video distribution, while rival distributor VCX began circulating the film in retaliation for Arrow’s distribution of Debbie Does Dallas and The Devil in Miss Jones—titles whose copyright status VCX disputed. In 2011, Arrow agreed to stop distributing those two films rather than risk a legal challenge to Deep Throat’s copyright. The dispute also derailed a planned remake. Vivid Entertainment owner Steven Hirsch announced a new production in 2008, but Arrow objected to its storyline, direction, and casting and withdrew permission for the title to be remade. Hirsch then edited and remarketed the project under the new name Throat: A Cautionary Tale, released in March 2009, turning a supposed remake into a legally cautious rebranding exercise.
