The Dark Redemption began life as an ambitious 1999 Australian Star Wars fanfilm centered on Mara Jade and even recruited veteran Peter Sumner to reprise a small Imperial role. Writers Warren Duxbury and Dwight Boniecki spent eight months on the script, and director/producer Mether marshaled a surprisingly professional crew — 72 scenes, roughly 20 CGI sequences and a team of about 20 3D artists, with a number of Foxtel presenters appearing onscreen. The short played twice at the Noosa Film Festival and circulated online among fandom as a polished piece of expanded-universe storytelling explaining backstory beats (including a Mara Jade turn toward the Emperor and a prequel take on Han’s troubles with Jabba).
