Although the concept might theoretically have supported a feminist satire about bodily autonomy, celebrity, and the exploitation of women, contemporary and later criticism argued that Chatterbox treated Penelope's ordeal as crude spectacle. The Los Angeles Times condemned its vulgar premise, foul language, and adolescent humor, describing the result as a male masturbatory fantasy stretched to feature length. Diabolique similarly argued that the film made its heroine suffer through humiliating situations—including being displayed naked before scientists and having her clothing ripped away during a performance—while her psychiatrist commandeered her career. The same review nevertheless singled out Rialson as engaging and unusually committed, noting that she brought dignity and emotional weight to material that seemed designed to overwhelm her. The film was poorly received by audiences and became notable less as a successful comedy than as an extreme example of late-1970s sexploitation trying to disguise an anatomical gag as a star vehicle.
