The Honeymoon Killers began as an extraordinarily unstable directing assignment. Producer Warren Steibel initially hired Martin Scorsese, then an emerging New York filmmaker, to direct the low-budget crime picture under the working title Dear Martha. Principal photography began in August 1968, but Scorsese was dismissed early in the shoot because the production was moving too slowly. The problem was not simply temperament: Scorsese later admitted that he had been fired 'with pretty good reason.' Faced with a roughly 200-page script, he was reportedly filming elaborate master shots without obtaining the additional coverage needed for conventional editing, a method that consumed time and made the inexpensive production increasingly difficult to manage.
