Wah Chang is frequently credited with designing the phaser used in Star Trek: The Original Series, but the surviving production account distinguishes between the weapon’s original design and Chang’s later fabrication work. Art director Matt Jefferies designed the phaser, while Desilu’s prop department first prepared a single working “hero” model. Gene Roddenberry considered that initial version unacceptable, after which Chang produced additional working and dummy mockups and reworked the props. A Desilu invoice dated August 22, 1966, records Chang being paid $520 for “reworking phasers,” supporting his important role in realizing and refining the objects without making him their original designer. The confusion is characteristic of television prop history: the craftsman whose hands turn a concept into a screen-used object can later be remembered as the designer, even when the production paperwork assigns those roles separately.
