Family Plot nearly began as a very different Hitchcock production. After Alma Reville encouraged Hitchcock to read Victor Canning's 1972 novel The Rainbird Pattern, Hitchcock asked playwright Anthony Shaffer to adapt it. Shaffer saw possibilities in the material but was uneasy about Hitchcock's proposed tone: a lighter, Noël Coward-meets-Madame Arcati kind of thriller rather than a straightforward suspense picture. The collaboration collapsed after Shaffer left for France. According to Shaffer, Hitchcock telephoned him about a week later and said that Shaffer's agent had made excessive demands, including a percentage of the film's box-office gross. Shaffer emphatically denied that any such financial demand had been discussed, leaving the precise cause of the rupture disputed. Hitchcock nevertheless canceled the arrangement and moved on.
